McKay Park

Located on Sunset Lake Road, Jefferson City, MO 65109

Live in or near Jefferson City, MO and looking for a fun park? Looking for a great place to stop for a picnic lunch between the Lake of the Ozarks and St. Louis, MO?

The 20.4 acre McKay Park is just the place you are looking for!

It features a one kilometer (0.6 mile) fitness trail which encircles the lake, a playground, an asphalt basketball court, and 10 picnic units (many of which are shaded).  This park is only 9 minutes from the town’s Chik-Fil A.

Fishing is allowed year-round at McKay Lake but only bank fishing is permitted. Large mouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, red-ear sunfish and crappie are the most plentiful species.

The back of the dam at McKay provides an excellent sledding hill during the winter season.

There are two playgrounds, a tot area and one for school age kids.

The tot playground features multiple climbers, a small tunnel and a slide.
Near the tot playground are four bucket swings. With the layout of the playground, it is nearly impossible to see kids playing on the school age playground if your little ones are on swinging on the bucket swings.

The school age playground features unique playground structures including a swinging climber and multiple climbers not seen on other playgrounds.  The slides are quite tall but not too fast.  I really liked that there was a large staircase that ran from the top to the bottom, so little ones could venture up, but also make their way back down if they were apprehensive about riding the slides.

Next to the larger playground sit four sling seat swings.

When we visited, there were approximately four different families of Canadian geese including little baby geese. The boys enjoyed seeing them but didn’t care for having to dodge their droppings all over the walkways.

This park also features a bathroom.  Considering it being a park, these facilities were quite nice and well maintained.  These are located up a small hill and behind some trees from the playgrounds.

We enjoyed this park and would give it a 3.5 graham cracker rating for its convenience to the highway and eating establishments, along with the draw of the playground and nice picnic benches.
